Kathy Mack O'Day is becoming known as an imaginative colourist.   Her works include acrylic paintings and   monotypes.

Although compelling color and texture guide the spirit of her contemporary style of painting, both the color and subject matter of her paintings are serene in appearance.

The impasto technique, the use of thick application of pigment, is still prevalent in some of her creations.  "I love to blend acrylic paint colors and textures; I'm not concerned with obvious subject matter.  I'd rather have the viewer discover their own images from each painting.  My work frequently has an  intuitive starting point."

"When painting, I work wet-into-wet onto archival DeArches or French watercolor paper or onto canvas.  I employ several tools of the trade to create the many patterns and textures apparent in my work.  These tools include blending sand or pebbles with the acrylic, also using sponges, paper towels, palette knives, brush or my fingers to make impressions into the wet paint ."

"The Monotype has become a popular medium for artists because it combines print-making and painting techniques in a hightly individual way.  My Monotype miniature paintings are a 'one of a kind' print, first painted with acrylic waterbased paint on a smooth surface such as glass or on an aluminum plate.  Conservation museum board or watercolor paper is then pressed against the smooth surface and the image is transferred.  This simple printing method allows me to create incredible depth on a very small surface; almost impossible to achieve with direct painting."

Kathy has been painting professionally for over 20 years.  Her works have been juried into national and international shows.  Her art is in corporate buildings and private collections throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe and Japan.  Kathy's art is displayed with The Art League Gallery, Torpedo Factory Arts Center, 105 North Union Street,  Alexandria, Virginia and with the McBride Gallery, 215 Main Street, Annapolis, Maryland.
